TERRAZZO

Terrazzo Tile

Terrazzo tile contains marble chips embedded in a cement based material. The marble chips are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. The cement may also vary in color. This began in Venice as a method of reusing leftover marble chips around 500 years ago. Workers handling marble slabs would have an assortment of oddly sized leftover chips when they finished their projects. Instead of letting these chips go to waste, the workers began grinding down the surfaces to use the marble in their own homes.
It wasn’t until around the 1920s that this style caught on in the US, where it continues to thrive today. Even though the style had been around in the US since before the 1900s, terrazzo tile only became a go-to choice for luxury flooring after World War I.

At this point, although the basic concept of terrazzo remained the same, the techniques evolved. For example, those original workers in Venice had to create tools known as galeras to smooth the marble chips. The galera was a grinding stone that they could work with while standing. When electric grinding equipment arrived in the 1920s, craftspeople in the US could create terrazzo with even better finishes.

After 500 years, terrazzo tile remains a great choice for luxury flooring. But what happens if it gets dirty and worn over the years? Like all the materials that make up your home, terrazzo requires care to retain its condition for a long time. For this reason, at Cleaner Image Marble & Surface Restoration, we specialize in terrazzo floor restorations.
